Australia beats Tunisia to win again in World Cup after 12 years

Do the J! When Mitchell Duke found the net in the Australia-Tunisia game, he made a ‘J’ with his hands in honor of his son Jaxson, who was spotted repeating the act in the stands at Al Janoub Stadium.

It was the only goal of the game, but enough to go down in history. The Oceania team won 1-0 and finally broke a negative mark: it was 12 years without a positive result in World Cups, adding a draw and six defeats since then.

The last victory had been in the 2010 World Cup, played in South Africa, against Serbia. In the last match of the group stage, Australia won 2-1, with goals from Tim Cahill and Brett Holman. Australia has played six editions of the tournament (1974, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022), with three wins, four draws and 11 defeats – a single trip to the round of 16, in 2006.

The team reaches three points in Group D, recovering after losing to France in the first match. Tunisia, defeated, remains with chances of qualifying for the last game, since it tied with Denmark on Tuesday (22).

The problem for the African country will be the game in the last round, against France, in which it will have to win. The combination of results will also be a decisive factor, depending on the score between the current world champions and Denmark.
