Lukaku recovers, but must lose clash against Morocco

Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, 29, is recovering faster than expected from a muscle injury in his left thigh, but is unlikely to participate in the duel between Belgium and Morocco, this Sunday (27), at 10 am, for the second round of the group F.

The information was confirmed by coach Roberto Martínez, 49. The star of the Red Devils has made two appearances for Inter Milan since August due to thigh injuries. Martínez is being careful with the situation of the player, a key part of the Belgian campaign in Qatar.

“Romelu would only be available for the third match, against Croatia, and that will be the case, but he is better than expected. He has trained twice with the group and the signs are great. I don’t expect him to play against Morocco, he doesn’t is 100% at the moment”, said the technician this Saturday (26).

Defender Toby Alderweireld and midfielder Kevin de Bruyne were spotted arguing heatedly over the use of direct linking during their lackluster 1-0 win over Canada. Martínez softened the situation and insisted that there was no rift between the two players.

“We can’t create a problem where it doesn’t exist. They are two experienced players who participated in more than seventy games together for the national team. They are winners and really want to play well”, added the coach, who is cautious about the threat that Morocco may represent.

“They are a team with a great mix of quality and talent, they have players who can create several opportunities in the penalty area. They are well organized, disciplined and have a good structure. They will compete with everyone and have incredible faith”, he commented.

Belgium were criticized for their poor performance against the Canadians on Wednesday (23), which was well below the standard they have set in recent years. But Martínez says that, like other teams in the competition, Belgium will improve with the games, as they have not had the usual preparation for the Cup.
