‘I threw him a poo’, says Di María of assisting Messi

by

Di María was sincere about the pass he gave to Messi in the goal that started Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Mexico, last Saturday, in Group C of the World Cup. “I threw him a poop,” he said, when asked if he wanted assisting credit. The merits, according to him, were all the number 10.

“He always finds a solution for everything,” he joked. “What matters is that the ball got to him.”

According to Di María, it was the perception of the conditions of the game that facilitated the move.

“We had talked a minute before. He said they were more in [da área] and so the space would appear in front of them, to try to give him the pass there. I waited for that moment to come and played for it. And he scored a goal. I have no other words. I had the opportunity to play with the best player in the world at club level and for 14 years with the national team. For me, Leo is everything”, he praised.

The game against Mexico was tense because Argentina, defeated by Saudi Arabia in the first round, needed a good result to gain a breather in the World Cup. Now in second place in the group, the South American team is tied with Saudi Arabia and one point behind Poland, which leads the standings.

“We knew that the first 45 minutes would be very difficult. Mexico knew that a draw could be good because their last game is against Saudi Arabia and they could beat them. We knew that the second half would be more open and that was it.” , concluded Di Maria.
