Aboubakar, savior of Cameroon, is only less of a scorer than legends of the country

Decisive for the Cameroon team to maintain the chance of qualifying for the round of 16 of the Cup in Qatar, striker Vincent Aboubakar, 30, is one of the best scorers of the African team.

The goal scored against Serbia, which started the Cameroonian reaction when the team lost 3-1 – the game ended 3-3–, was Aboubakar’s 34th goal for the national team.

The number 10 is second only to two strikers who are considered legends in the history of the team: Samuel Eto’o (56 goals), who defended Cameroon from 1997 to 2014, and Roger Milla (43 goals), who played from 1973 to 1994.

Milla is the oldest outfield player (excluding goalkeepers) to play in a World Cup. He achieved the feat at the 1994 Worlds, in the USA, aged 42 years and 39 days.

In the game against Serbia at the Al Janoub stadium, in Al Wakrah, Aboubakar, who came on 10 minutes into the second half, when Cameroon was losing 3-1, not only scored a beautiful goal, covering the goalkeeper Milinkovic-Savic, but also gave an accurate pass for Choupo-Moting to give final numbers to the duel.

Until the start of the Qatari Cup, Aboubakar was not only a starter but captain of the Cameroonian national team, and he was expected to lead the team on the pitch.

Coach Rigobert Song, however, relegated him to the reserve, preferring Choupo-Moting, 33, a standout for Bayern Munich, as the starting center forward.

Aboubakar, who started at Valenciennes, in France, and had an outstanding spell in Porto (Portugal) from 2015 to 2018, also played for Besiktas (Turkey) and is currently out of a great football showcase. He plays for Al Nasr in Saudi Arabia.

For the selection of his country, the greatest achievement is the conquest of the African Cup of Nations of 2017, in Gabon.

In the decision, Aboubakar, who came on at halftime, scored the goal in the 43rd minute that gave the 2-1 victory over Egypt and the fifth title of the tournament for Cameroon.
