The Attorney of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) denounced Grêmio this Monday (1st) after the vandalism scenes carried out by the club’s fans in the defeat to Palmeiras this Sunday (31).
According to a statement posted on the STJD website, the association was framed in two articles of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD): article 213, “for not preventing and repressing invasion, disorder and object throwing”, and article 211, “for leaving to maintain the stadium with the necessary infrastructure to guarantee the security of the match”.
The penalty provided for in these cases is a fine of R$100 to R$100,000.
In addition, the complainants ask that Grêmio play with the gates closed until the trial of the case in the STJD.
“For the Prosecutor’s Office, Grêmio playing with a single crowd in its stadium is not effective in containing scenes of violence such as those witnessed this Sunday,” says the statement. “Based on article 119 of the CBJD, the complaint also requests the granting of an injunction so that Grêmio matches as principals take place with closed gates and in games as a visitor, Grêmio is not entitled to charge 10% of the tickets until the judgment” , concludes.
After the vandalism scenes, in addition to an accusation of racism, Grêmio released an official statement on Monday, before the complaint, commenting on the episodes that took place within its arena.
After the defeat by 3-1 to Palmeiras, which further complicated the situation of the tricolors in the fight against relegation in the Brazilian Championship, some Grêmio fans invaded the pitch, destroyed the VAR cabin and transmission equipment. At the same time, fans of both teams tried to exchange punches through the side of the grid that separated the local and visiting public.
A video circulated on social networks also showed a Grêmio fan imitating what would be a monkey towards Palmeiras fans. This case is not directly cited by the club in its statement.
“Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense informs that it is employing all the necessary efforts to, in addition to those who have already been recognized and presented to Organs competent bodies, identify the other transgressors in relation to the event that took place at the end of the match between Grêmio and Palmeiras, in the Arena , leaving it to the discretion of the legitimate authorities, that offenders are punished in accordance with the law,” said the association.
“The Grêmio, usually engaged in actions and awareness campaigns against any type of violence and discrimination, does not condone acts committed by a small portion of those present at yesterday’s match,” he continued.
“It is reiterated that the club will not refrain from taking the appropriate internal measures, after the investigation and accountability of the individuals involved in the episode. Finally, Grêmio renews its commitment to strict compliance with the law and maintenance of the public order, remaining available and acting proactively,” he concluded.
With the defeat, Grêmio remained in the penultimate place of the Brazilian Nationals and is seven points behind Bahia, 16th place and the first team to get rid of the fall to Serie B. The club from Rio Grande do Sul is missing 11 games in the competition.
