Santos fans hold a vigil for Pelé in front of the hospital in São Paulo

After being remembered during the World Cup by fans in stadiums in Qatar, it was Pelé’s turn to be honored by the main fans of the team that vibrated the most for him.

This Sunday (4), Torcida Jovem, from Santos, organized a vigil in front of the Albert Einstein hospital, in Morumbi, south of São Paulo, to show solidarity and pray for the health of the greatest scorer in the history of the club, and who immortalized shirt number 10.

Since 10 am, some fans have tied a flag in front of the hospital with the image of the Athlete of the Century and a Santos crest. They also fixed mini-posters on sulphite sheets with a reproduction of a photo of Pelé with the number 10 shirt and the phrase “long life to the king”.

Before 11 am, a bus brought more members of the crowd. They were joined by other Santos supporters who were not part of the organization. In all, about a hundred fans attended the vigil.

“We hope that Pelé recovers, we know that this is a very difficult moment in his life. This is just a tribute from people who are from Santos, so he knows that we are here cheering and praying for him”, commented Ciro Estivalli dos Santos, 62, who is not part of the organized group, but lives in Morumbi and found out about the vigil through social media.

Organized members preferred not to talk to the press that accompanied the demonstration. “We are not here to give interviews, just to honor and pray for the King,” said one.

In a publication on his social networks on Saturday (3), Pelé said he was “strong, with a lot of hope”.

The King of Football has been hospitalized since Tuesday (29) at the Albert Einstein hospital for treatment of colon cancer.

“My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive. I’m strong, with a lot of hope and I follow my treatment as always. I want to thank all the medical and nursing staff for all the care I’ve received. I have a lot of faith in God and every message of love I receive from you, from all over the world, keeps me full of energy. And watching Brazil in the World Cup too! Thank you so much for everything”, said the publication on Instagram.

Pelé, 82, no longer responds to the chemotherapy treatment he had been undergoing since last September, when he was operated on for bowel cancer. At the beginning of the year, metastases in the intestine, lung and liver were diagnosed.

THE Sheet found that the ace is in exclusive palliative care. This means that chemotherapy has been suspended and that he continues to receive comfort measures, to relieve pain and shortness of breath, for example, without being subjected to invasive therapies.

On Friday afternoon (2), the hospital released a note informing that Pelé had been diagnosed with a respiratory infection, which is being treated with antibiotics.

On Saturday (3), the hospital released a new note in which it repeats the content of the previous bulletin, informing that Pelé is still undergoing treatment, and his health status remains stable. “It has also had a good response to respiratory infection care, showing no worsening in the last 24 hours”, he says.
