Globo’s traditional World Cup broadcasts are full of personalities already known by the public, but they also have some new features.

Between newcomers and veterans, see a summary of the main names in the broadcaster’s coverage of the 2022 World Cup.

Galvão Bueno, 72

Globo’s emblematic narrator is in Qatar for his farewell. After 42 years at the station, Galvão says he will not return to narrate after this Cup. “Open TV narration, no more. We are negotiating other things. Other paths. And, most likely, a lot of things in this digital world and other platforms within Grupo Globo”, he said.

He started at the station in 1980 and is narrating his 11th World Cup — among them, he narrated the 1994 and 2002 titles of the Brazilian national team.

Junior, 68

Maestro Júnior, one of the outstanding full-backs in the history of Brazilian football, became a commentator in 1998, when he participated in SporTV and Premiere broadcasts. He was on Record, but since 2005 he has been one of Globo’s main commentators in games in Rio de Janeiro, having participated in the transmission of all World Cups since 1998 by the broadcaster.

It is the only remnant of the old Galvão team, which already had Arnaldo Cezar Coelho, Walter Casagrande Jr. and Paulo Roberto Falcão, in addition to Tino Marcos and Mauro Naves in the report. It’s in Qatar for the broadcast.

Ana Thais Matos, 37

Ana is the first woman to comment on matches of the Brazilian men’s team in a World Cup on open TV. The journalist was invited to participate in the Troca de Passes bench, at the 2018 World Cup, and joined the program’s fixed scale. Shortly after, she became the first commentator of matches on open TV, participating in the transmission of the Women’s World Cup, in 2019, by Globo. Ana Thaís is in Qatar.

Roque Junior, 46

Defender in winning the penta, in the 2002 Cup, began commenting on games for SporTV and Premiere, in early 2021. In March 2022, he resigned to continue studies aimed at work in football management, but returned to the broadcaster to comment on football games. Brazilian team in the World Cup. Roque is in Qatar with the team.

Luis Roberto, 61

Owner of broadcasts of games in Rio de Janeiro, the narrator has worked on several vehicles, including ESPN Brasil, from where he went to Globo in 1998. Luís Roberto is narrating his seventh edition of the World Cup on the broadcaster. On Radio Gazeta, he also narrated games of the 1986 World Cup. He is in Qatar together with Galvão Bueno.

Roger Flores, 44

As a player, he went through clubs like Fluminense, Flamengo, Corinthians, Grêmio, Cruzeiro and even teams from Qatar. Roger is one of the main commentators on Globo’s Carioca football broadcasts. After ending his career as a midfielder, he became a commentator for SporTV, and today he is working on his second edition of the World Cup. Roger is in Qatar with the broadcaster’s team.

Cleber Machado, 60

The narrator is the owner of soccer broadcasts on TV Globo in São Paulo and one of the main members of the broadcaster’s team, alongside Luís Roberto. Cléber, however, was not taken to Qatar, and is narrating his matches in the station’s studio. He participates in his ninth edition of the World Cup.

Caio Ribeiro, 47

Another former player, Caio is another holder of football broadcasts by Globo in São Paulo. With passages through São Paulo, Santos, Flamengo, Inter Milan and Napoli, he participates in his first edition of the World Cup as a commentator and is in Qatar with the team.

Ricardinho, 46

He played for teams like Corinthians, Paraná, Santos, São Paulo and Atlético Mineiro and is one of the 2002 world champions, called up as a substitute. He acted as a coach for a few years after the end of his career as a player, but ended up becoming a commentator for SporTV. For the closed TV station, he worked at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Today, he is part of the Globo team. He was not sent to Qatar.

Renata Silveira, 33

The announcer was the first woman to narrate a World Cup game on open TV. On cable TV, Renata herself, along with Isabelly Morais and Manuela Avena, had already narrated games from the 2018 World Cup, on the defunct Fox Sports. She was hired by Grupo Globo at the end of 2020 and started narrating games for SporTV. Today she transits between the closed and open TV teams. She is covering the tournament in Brazil.

Paul Nunes, 51

‘Diabo Blonde’ is one of the former players who comment on games on Globo and SporTV. Paulo went through teams like Flamengo, Grêmio, Benfica, Palmeiras and Corinthians during his career as a player. He became a sports commentator and is now part of Globo’s team for the World Cup. He is working from studios in Brazil.

Richarlyson, 39

A former player for clubs such as São Paulo and Atlético Mineiro, Richarlyson became a commentator for SporTV in early 2022. He quickly stood out and today makes up Globo’s team for broadcasting the Cup. It was not sent to Qatar.

Gustavo Villani, 41

The narrator is a graduate of Fox Sports and ESPN Brasil – he arrived at TV Globo in 2018. He has already narrated the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and is the official announcer of FIFA, a football game for consoles and PC. He did not travel to Qatar.

Ant, 44

World runner-up in 2007, she is the only person to participate in seven World Cups as an athlete. She is one of Globo’s commentators for the 2022 World Cup. Formiga had already commented on matches for the Copa América Feminina on SporTV and friendly matches for the women’s national team on Globo. She didn’t go to Qatar.

Diego Ribas, 37

Recently retired as champion of the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil with Flamengo, he took over as a commentator for Globo in the World Cup shortly after hanging up his boots, at the end of the 2022 season of Brazilian football. Diego is not in Qatar.

Ze Roberto, 48

As a player, he played for Portuguesa, Real Madrid, Bayern, Bayer Leverkusen, Santos, Grêmio and Palmeiras. Called up for the 1998 and 2006 World Cups, he is one of Globo’s commentators for the World Cup broadcast. Zé was already a commentator for the SporTV Selection between 2020 and 2021, but left the station; now, he returns to participate in the coverage of the World Cup, but he didn’t go to Qatar.

Whistle Center

Paulo César de Oliveira, 48, Salvio Spínola, 54, Sandro Meira Ricci, 48, and Janette Arcanjo, 42, are the former referees of the so-called Central do Apito, the team that comments on the performance of the judges.
