FIFA announced this Saturday (10) the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the federations of Argentina and the Netherlands for incidents between players and members of the technical commissions in the game on Friday (9), for the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar .

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the AFA [Associação do Futebol Argentino] for potential violations of articles 12 [má conduta de jogadores e comissão técnica] and 16 [ordem e segurança nos jogos] of the FIFA Code of Discipline during the match between the Netherlands and Argentina in the World Cup, which took place on December 9”, explains the organization in its statement.

“Furthermore, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the KNVB [Federação Holandesa de Futebol] for potential violations of Article 12 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in relation to the same match,” he added.

The rules provide for suspensions of one to three games as punishment for athletes who practice unsportsmanlike conduct towards their opponents.

The duel, won by Argentina 4-2 on penalties —after a 2-2 draw in normal time and extra time—, was particularly tense, and the referee, Spaniard Mateu Lahoz, showed 16 yellow cards (eight for the Argentines and eight for the Dutch) and a red for Denzel Dumfries during the penalty shootout.

In stoppage time, Lahoz had yellow-carded Wout Weghorst, who was then on the substitute bench, for complaining. In the second half, Weghorst came on and scored the two goals that allowed the Netherlands to take the game into extra time.

The penalty shootout was also tense. After Lautaro Martínez converted the kick that gave Argentina the classification, the players provoked the celebration of the Dutch, gathered in the central circle.

Throughout the game there was tension between the teams and at certain times there were beginnings of confusion and fights, which forced Mateu Lahoz to intervene to prevent the situation from worsening.
