More than 1.5 million people in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region are without electricity after Russian drone attacks on the power grid, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
All non-critical infrastructure in the Ukrainian port of Odessa was without power after Russia used Iranian-made drones to hit two energy facilities, officials said today, adding that it could take months to repair the damage.
More than 1.5 million people in the Odesa region of southern Ukraine are without electricity after Russian drone attacks on the power generation system, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a videotaped speech, describing the situation as very difficult.
Since October, Moscow has targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with large-scale missile and drone strikes.
The district administration said people who rely solely on electricity to power their homes should consider leaving. Officials said the Russian strikes hit transmission lines and key equipment in the early hours of Saturday.
“According to preliminary estimates, it will take much longer to repair the damage to energy facilities in the Odesa region than it would have taken after the previous attacks,” the administration said.
“We are talking not days, but weeks and possibly even two to three months,” according to her Facebook post.
Odessa, Ukraine’s largest port, had a population of more than a million before the Russian invasion on February 24.
According to Kiev, Russia has launched hundreds of Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones at targets in Ukraine and calls the attacks war crimes because of their devastating impact on civilian life. Moscow speaks of legitimate military targets.
In his speech, Zelensky said that there is a significant deficit in the amount of energy produced.
The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine announced that two power plants in the Odesa region were hit by Shahed-136 drones.
Ukraine’s armed forces said in a Facebook post that 15 drones were fired at targets in the southern Odesa and Mykolayiv regions and 10 were shot down.
Tehran denies supplying the drones to Moscow. Kiev and its Western allies say this is a lie.
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said today it believes Iran’s military support to Russia is likely to increase in the coming months, including possible deliveries of ballistic missiles.
