Police officers and fans celebrating the victories of France and Morocco, this Saturday (10), clashed on the Champs-Élysées avenue, in Paris. Security forces used tear gas.
Thousands took to the road right after the match between the Africans and the Portuguese, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Morocco. They sang, waved flags and blew bugles, under the watchful eye of the police.
After France’s 2-1 victory over England, more fans took to the avenue.
Reuters TV footage shows people attacking stores and clashing with police. Fire was also seen on Avenue de Friedland, next to the Champs-Élysées.
Present at the World Cup since the 1934 edition –when Egypt lost its only match, 4-2, to Hungary, in Italy–, Africa had never placed a representative among the top four.
Morocco advanced to the semi-finals with just one goal conceded in five matches at the Cup, showing strength for the longest campaign by a country on its continent.
In the other game, Oliver Giroud scored the goal to qualify France over England and put the current world champions once again in the semifinals.
