Flamengo announced Vítor Pereira as the team’s new coach this Tuesday (13). His name had already been rumored at the club since November, when Dorival Júnior’s departure was confirmed.

“Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that it has an agreement with coach Vítor Pereira to command the professional squad in 2023”, declared the club on social networks.

The Portuguese said goodbye to Corinthians making and receiving vows of love. Club president Duilio Monteiro Alves called the coach a friend and brother. “We put an end to the 2022 season, which, for me, was good. After many years, Corinthians fought at the top, reached a Copa do Brasil final, remained the entire Brazilian Championship between the four and we are next year’s Libertadores with a direct vacancy”, he evaluated.

Pereira had a contract until the end of the year and decided not to stay at the club. The technician even indicated that he wanted the renewal, but that this decision would also depend on family issues.

Doubts about Pereira’s permanence had been dragging on for some months. His mother-in-law has health problems, which is why the coach’s wife and children have lived in Portugal.

“I feel very sad, I really wanted to continue this project, but there’s no chance. I’m not going to any club, I’m not going anywhere, I’m going home. I have to help stabilize my mother-in-law’s illness a little. , who is living in my house. That’s why I have to go back there”, said Vítor Pereira, in an interview with ESPN.

The coach arrived at Corinthians in March and led the team in 63 games, with 29 wins, 16 draws and 18 defeats. During the period, the team was runner-up in the Copa do Brasil, reached the semifinals of Paulista and the quarterfinals of Libertadores, and finished the Brazilian in fourth place.

Coach Dorival Júnior announced his departure from Flamengo on November 25, 11 days after Pereira did not renew with Corinthians. Alvinegro hired Fernando Lázaro, who worked as a performance analyst for the Brazilian national team.

According to Dorival, “the board understood, and I respect that, that this moment would be one of change”.

Dorival said that, in conversation with the club’s board, he informed that he intended to dedicate himself to the club in 2023. According to him, the financial issue would not be a problem for the renewal. “Like it never was, in any club I’ve been”, he highlighted.

In his third spell at Gávea, the captain was mainly responsible for restoring the athletes’ confidence after a bad start to the season, which resulted in the dismissal of Portuguese Paulo Souza in July, when the team ranked only 14th in the Brazilian ranking. He had also been defeated in the decisions of the State and the Super Cup of Brazil.
