The German Football Association (DFB) announced this Tuesday (13) that it has created a group of renowned former sportsmen, including Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Matthias Sammer, to rebuild the German national team, which was eliminated in the first round of the Qatar Cup.

This group should help the team prepare for Euro 2024, which will be held in Germany in 18 months, said DFB president Bernd Neuendorf. In addition to Sammer and Rummenigge, the board will comprise Rudi Völler, Oliver Kahn and Oliver Mintzlaff.

Coach Hansi Flick was confirmed in charge until 2024, despite early elimination in this year’s Cup.

On the other hand, the federation must now find a successor to the director of the national team, Oliver Bierhoff, who was sacked after the failure at the World Cup. The replacement is expected to be announced in early 2023.

After being eliminated in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, in Russia, when defending the title won in Brazil-2014, Germany also left through the back door in this edition, after the defeat against Japan (2 to 1), from draw against Spain (1 to 1) and the victory over Costa Rica (4 to 2) which did little good.

Since the victory on penalties against Italy in the quarterfinals of Euro 2016, the Germans have played 11 matches in major tournaments and won only three, against Sweden (Copa 2018), Portugal (Euro 2021) and Costa Rica (Qatar- 2022).

In addition, Germany will also be without goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer until the end of the season. The Bayern Munich goalkeeper seriously injured his right knee while skiing during his vacation.
