Deschamps is the fourth coach to play two consecutive Cup finals

Didier Deschamps, 54, will be the fourth coach to participate in two consecutive World Cup decisions.

The opportunity comes with the French victory in the semifinal, by 2 to 0, against Morocco, in the Al-Bayt stadium, in Al Khor.

Until the World Cup in Qatar, the coaches who were in two consecutive World Cups in the match worth the cup were the Italian Vitorio Pozzo, in 1934 and 1938, the Argentine Carlos Bilardo and the German Franz Beckenbauer, opponents in 1986 and 1990.

Of them, only Pozzo (1886-1968) was 100% successful, with the Squadra Azzurra triumphing in the second and third editions of the Cup, played in Italy and France, respectively.

Erm 1986, in the World Cup in which Maradona shone, Bilardo’s Argentina won the final, 3-2, against Beckenbauer’s Germany, in Mexico City.

Four years later, at the second World Cup on Italian soil, the “Kaiser” struck back, with the Germans triumphing 1-0 in Rome.

Deschamps will therefore have a chance to match Pozzo. If this happens, the Frenchman will have a differential in comparison with the Italian: he has a World Cup as a player.

At the second World Cup in France, in 1998, he captained the team that beat the Brazilian team 3-0 at the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis.

After the match against Morocco, Deschamps said, still on the field, that the game “was very tough” and that he had a feeling of “emotion” and “pride”.

According to him, his team was rewarded for their dedication. “The players have been in full concentration for more than a month and have been rewarded. They have to be congratulated for their effort.”
