Club World Cup will have 32 teams and will be played every 4 years from 2025

Fifa announced this Friday (16), in a press conference given by president Gianni Infantino, that the Club World Cup will be played every four years, with 32 teams in dispute, starting in 2025.

The idea had already been announced in 2019, but with 24 teams. The plan was for the new format to debut in 2021, but the covid-19 pandemic postponed the reformulation. Today, the Club World Cup is disputed by seven clubs in the period of one month, in December.

The new distribution of clubs by continent has not yet been defined. The same goes for the host: it is still unknown which countries will host the new tournament in 2025.

The rearrangement will fill the gap left in the calendar by the end of the Confederations Cup, which was being played during the period in which the new World Cup will be held: one year before the World Cup – the next one to be held in 2026.

Although the host is not defined, it is likely to follow the format of the old Confederations Cup, serving as a test for the World Cup, a year before the event, for the countries that will hold it. In the case of 2025, it would be Mexico, USA and Canada.

Another novelty announced is the creation of the Women’s Club World Cup. According to Infantino, the details of the tournament have not yet been defined.
