With the six goals in the final between Argentina and France, at the Lusail stadium, the World Cup in Qatar became the World Cup with the highest number of goals in the entire history of the competition. There were 172, one more than the tournaments in Russia (2018) and France (1998), hitherto record holders.
Despite the numbers, the tournament in Qatar averaged 2.68 goals per match —there were 64— and was far from surpassing the best averages.
In 1954, in Switzerland, 140 goals were scored in 26 games, which gives an average of 5.38 per game, something practically impossible to overcome these days.
In 1958, when the Brazilian team won its first title, the ball hit the net 126 times in 35 games, an average of 3.6 per game.
The Qatar edition ended with Mbappé top scorer, with eight goals. It was the best mark since the 2002 World Cup, when Ronaldo also scored eight goals.
