Macron’s attitude towards Mbappé was ‘ridiculous’, says French opposition

The French opposition has criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s attempt to console Kylian Mbappé after the World Cup final lost to Argentina in Qatar.

A “totally ridiculous” attitude, declared the vice-president of the far-right National Regroupment (RN), Sebastien Chenu.

“It was an inopportune and uncomfortable gesture,” said Socialist leader Olivier Faure.

“It was a little sad to see him hanging like a nail on Mbappé,” MP Sebastien Chenu told LCI.

“Irritation”, tweeted the deputy Sandrine Rousseau, from the Green party, when commenting on the attitude of the head of state.

“Emmanuel Macron, world champion of shame,” insisted ecologist Benjamin Lucas.

After the match, the president descended from the stadium’s tribune of honor to the lawn and the cameras caught the moment when he tried to console Kylian Mbappé.

Later, the French presidency shared a video on social media that shows Macron addressing the players alongside national team coach Didier Deschamps.

“Sports must not be politicized”, joked on Twitter the deputy of the Insubmissive France party (left), Manuel Bompard, when repeating the phrase used by Macron at the beginning of the World Cup in Qatar.

“Finally, the defeat was not the most difficult moment of the day,” added Thomas Portes, member of France Insubmissa.

The first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, as well as other left-wing deputies, shared an article from the sports magazine So Foot: “Macron, impeded in all respects”.

The text criticizes the president’s public attitude during the World Cup, in particular the images of Macron trying to console Mbappé, who “hardly seems to hear him”.
