‘We can’t do worse’, scolded Mbappe at half-time in the Cup final

Kylian Mbappé is not the captain of the French national team, a position belonging to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. However, in the break from the first to the second half of the Qatar Cup final, it was he who asked for the floor to scold his colleagues.

“We can’t do worse”, declared the number 10, emphasizing that they were there, in the Lusail stadium, disputing “the final of the World Cup”.

At the end of the first stage, France, which was trying to win the second Cup in a row and the third overall, lost, playing very poorly, to Messi’s Argentina by 2-0.

Mbappé’s speech, who was shirtless and visibly dissatisfied, is in the documentary “Merci les Bleus” (Thank you, Blues), produced by the French TV channel TF1 about France’s campaign for the 2022 World Cup.

Regarded as discreet and quiet, the 24-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker showed a little-known face of leadership by giving his teammates a jolt with this motivational speech.

“It’s a World Cup, guys, it’s the game of a lifetime,” he said. “We go back on the field and either let them make fools of us or we put some intensity on it. It’s a World Cup final, it’s something like that every four years!”

Experienced reserve goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, 37, also spoke, while coach Didier Deschamps walked around the dressing room with his hands on his hips. The coach later slapped the table, irritated by his teammates’ poor performance, and issued instructions.

France came back different in the second half, reacted and tied the match, with two goals from Mbappé.

The game went into overtime. In it, one more goal for each side (France’s was Mbappé’s again), and the title was decided on penalties, in which Argentina won and ended up winning the 22nd World Cup.
