The Military Police of the State of São Paulo and the Fire Department are preparing a joint mega-operation for Pelé’s wake and burial.
The PM states that “it will provide a robust structure of means and police contingent for the tributes to Edson Arantes do Nascimento”. The King of Football died last Thursday (29), and his death certificate listed four causes: kidney failure, heart failure, bronchopneumonia and colon adenocarcinoma.
There is no set time for the former player’s body to leave Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. It is likely that he will leave the site at dawn from Sunday (1st) to Monday (2nd), to avoid traffic on the streets of the capital and on the way down the mountain towards Santos.
The wake, in Vila Belmiro, will start at 10 am on Monday (2nd) and will remain open until Tuesday morning (3rd). The expectation is to receive a large audience in the final farewell to the King.
The burial, at the Ecumenical Acropolis Memorial, is scheduled to take place at 10 am on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, weather permitting, the coffin containing Pelé’s body will travel in an open fire truck from Vila Belmiro to the burial site. On the way to the cemetery, the procession will pass by Channel 6, where Pelé’s mother, Celeste Arantes, who turned 100 last November, lives. For health reasons, she was not informed of her son’s death.
In São Paulo, the PM foresees reinforced policing in the region of Congonhas airport, since there is the expectation of the arrival of many sportsmen, politicians and authorities to participate in the tributes to Pelé.
Graduated president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who will take office on the 1st, is studying going to Santos, but the possibility is considered remote by allies.
The route in the city of São Paulo to the Imigrantes highway and the possible blocking of streets have not yet been decided. The PM and the CET are dealing with the matter and should define everything this Saturday (31).
The Military Police will deploy agents from the Capital Policing Command, Metropolitan Policing, Interior Policing-6 (Santos), Shock Policing, Road Policing, Traffic Policing, Aviation Command to carry out Operation Rei Pelé of the PM and the Fire Brigade.
