FIFA asks for a minute of silence for Pelé at all football matches in the world

FIFA (International Football Federation) recommended this Friday (30) that all its members adopt a minute of silence in honor of Pelé, before all matches, until next week.

The King of Football died this Thursday (29), aged 82, from multiple organ failure, after progression of colon cancer diagnosed in 2021.

“FIFA asks competition organizers to observe a minute’s silence before each match this weekend and next week. signed by the general secretary, Fatma Samoura.

The letter is addressed to all federations that make up the entity. “In solidarity with family and friends, the Brazilian Football Confederation, Brazil and all the fans who loved him so much, the flags of FIFA’s headquarters will be flown at half mast”, adds the text.

Moments after confirming the death of the King of Football, the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, had already released an open letter in which he pays homage to the former player. The entity also published a video on its social networks with testimonials from close people and images of Pelé’s career.

Even before FIFA’s official recommendation, several matches played in Europe this Friday (30) were marked by tributes to the King.

The Premier League had already announced that Pelé would be honored throughout the 18th round of the Premier League, but with a minute of applause instead of silence. Additionally, players will perform wearing a black armband as a sign of mourning.

The Italian federation had also already determined a minute of silence in honor of Pelé in all matches of the 16th round, in the return of Serie A, on January 4th.
