Gunmen killed three police officers and wounded four others in an attack on a security post in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia.

Security sources spoke of a “terrorist attack”, the first in three years in an Egyptian city outside the Sinai Peninsula, where jihadist groups operate.

Two armed men came from two cars that approached the police station and started shooting with automatic weapons at the policemen, killing three of them. An officer is among the four injured.

Other officers responded by opening fire and killing one of the attackers. The second was injured, but managed to escape.

In recent years, attacks against security forces and government officials have been mostly confined to the Sinai Peninsula, where it appears, however, that jihadist groups have now lost their momentum.
