“Clean” three points for the renewed Foinikas Syros in Orestiada

by

THE Phoenix ONEX with a new coach Aleksandar Senisic on the bench and the top two wingers of Klinkenberg and Fromm took a clear victory with 3-0 set by Sport in Orestiada and scored a valuable three points and took a deep breath for the continuation of the championship.

The match in the final had nerves and a red card for Dimitris Rizopoulos and was marked by two refereeing errors as no point was deducted from Athlos when, after a challenge on a service by Kasambalis, the ball was initially given to Athlos but as seen in the video, the ball was out. A point was given to Foinikas and also to Athlos, while following the protests Rizopoulos received a red card which was not written in the score. So instead of the score being 18-24 it became 19-23.

In general, it was a match that had nice phases and a strong final match between the two great teams. The first scorers of Phoenix were Fromm and Klinkeberg who scored 15 points each, while Athlos lagged behind offensively and Algoul was the first scorer with 11 points.

Phoenix needed time to get into the game, especially in reception, which the hosts took advantage of by pressing from the serve. With Rizopoulos leading the effort, Athlos took a 6-2 lead, extending their lead to 11-6 and then 14-8 along the way. Kasampali’s ace made it 16-10, however, from that point on, Finikas picked up speed and ran a 3-0 run for 16-13. Papadopoulos coming in for Fromm for the reception helped the defense, while two attacks from Klinkenberg narrowed the gap even further to 18-16. The tie came at 18-18 with Genoff serving out, while the Belgian winger’s block put Phoenix ahead for the first time in the game. The game became a derby from there and went to overtime. Fromm with three attacks and then Michalovic with three more led Phoenix to the victory with 28-26, despite three set balls by Athlos.

The game was more free in the second set and by extension the spectacle from both teams, with the impressive defenses giving several phases of duration. Regarding the score, after the 5-5 that came with Fromm’s pipe, the home team temporarily led by +2, but the tie came again at 10-10 with Djuric. After 14-14, Phoenix overtook and forced his opponents into several errors, while De Pra was replaced by Bozidis for the rest of the set. So the difference reached +5, at 16-21 with an attack by Fromm, who continued with another attack and an ace to “write” 17-23. Athlos cut back to 21-24 with two points by Bozidis, but two service errors by the home team made it 21-25.

Although the third set started as a monologue by Phoenix and until 7-12 it showed that it will go like this until the end, the home team with fighting spirit and passion from the young Bozidis and Tsioutsiouloudis brought the tie to 14-14 and made the game a derby. Phoenix was decisive at many points and thanks to Klinkenberg with three consecutive points, it made it 17-20. A smart placement by Michalovic and a wrong attack by Rizopoulos made it 17-22 for Phoenix. Klinkeberg lost serve (18-22).

Kasampalis served. Initially, Athlos was given an ace for 19-22, but after the Challenge referee, it turned out that the ball was out on Kasampali’s serve.

But instead of it being 18-23, Athlos’ point was preserved and the match continued with 19-23. And as if that wasn’t enough, the red card that Dimitris Rizopoulos was charged for protesting in front of the first referee was not charged. So, overall the score should have been 18-24, instead it continued to 19-23 and the match caught fire as Athlos managed to equalize…

Algoul made it 20-23 even though here again the Challenge was needed, this time in favor of Orestiada. De Pra got a block and cut it even further 21-23. Another controversial phase followed. Michalovic nailed out. Initially the referees gave the ball to Foinikas but they changed their decision and the point was given to Athlos and rightly so as the ball seemed to go high without being in the block of Kasambalis. So the score became 22-23. In the next phase it was 23-23. After two difficult phases, Michalovic and Djuric with attacks made it 25-23 for Foinikas ONEX, who took the victory with 3-0 sets.

The sets: 0-3 (26-28, 21-25, 23-25) in 94′.
