The only team to finish the 2021 F1 season without scoring even a point, Haas ended the year at the top of a ranking in which no team would like to be ahead: that of losses caused by accidents involving its drivers.
According to information released by Sky Sports in Germany, the US-based team spent 6.6 million euros (BRL 43 million) in expenses with incidents on the track and the need to manufacture new parts for the vehicles of its two pilots, debutants in the category. The main responsible for this amount was Mick Schumacher.
The son of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher caused 4.2 million euros ($27 million) of material damage to the team, topping the unwanted list. His partner, Russian Nikita Mazepin, was in eighth place, with 2.4 million euros (R$ 16 million).
Despite Mazepin’s reputation as a barber throughout the season for being involved in a series of accidents and even disturbing the other drivers on the track, he caused less damage than this year’s champion, Dutchman Max Verstappen, the third in the ranking.
The Red Bull driver generated an expense of 3.8 million euros (R$25 million) for the Red Bull team to repair and build new parts for his car.
Responsible for the accident that caused the safety car to enter the final laps of the decisive Abu Dhabi GP —when Verstappen had the opportunity to overtake Lewis Hamilton in the last lap restart and win the race to take the title—, Canadian Nicholas Latifi caused a loss of BRL 20 million to Williams throughout the year.
At the other end of the list, Alpine was the team that lost the least with accidents. The French team, which was piloted by the duo Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon, totaled 591,000 euros (R$ 3.8 million) in expenses. Ocon was the one who least demanded this expense, with R$ 1.8 million, followed by the Spanish, R$ 2 million.
Together, they gave less damage than the 18th place in this ranking, German Sebastian Vettel, from Aston Martin, who had to spend 660,000 euros (R$ 4.2 million) to repair the four-time champion’s car.
