Black plate for collectors back in Mercosur format

by

Contran (National Traffic Council) authorized the return of black plates for collectors’ vehicles, now in Mercosur format. The decision was published this Wednesday (22) in the Official Gazette and takes effect from June 1, 2022.

The black plate with white letters was created in 1998 to identify old collector vehicles. With the adoption of the Mercosur Plate, vehicles started to be identified with a white background plate and silver letters.

The return of the black background was a demand from entities such as the FBVA (Brazilian Federation of Antique Vehicles), which considers the most attractive model and a symbol of collection vehicles.

A public consultation was opened by Senatran (National Traffic Department) so that citizens could give their opinion on which model would be adopted.

The consultation ended on the last 3rd and Contran approved the measure in a meeting on December 13th.

The Mercosur model plates were adopted in 2019 and are inspired by the integrated system adopted by the countries of the European Union. In South America, they unify the standard of license plates in the five signatory countries of the agreement (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela).

The new board is for restricted use in the national territory.
