A few days after the huge upset victory over Villarreal in the Cup, the Real Madrid got another big double, beating Athletic 2-0 in Bilbao.
The Basques entered the match strongly and troubled the “merengues”, who, however, managed to open the scoring.
It was in the 24th minute when Asensio found him Benzema inside the area and the Frenchman beat Simon with a terrific shot.
Athletic looked more and more for an equalizer as time wore on and thought they had found it when Inaki Williams fired the ball into the net in the 77th minute.
The goal, however, was disallowed for offside, with the “merengues” finally reaching a second goal with a wonderful spot-kick Cross in the 90’s.
It is worth noting that the 49,316 spectators who watched the match at “San Mames” were a record attendance for the Basque stadium.
