by

On the first day, more than 220 sportsmen and women passed through the main gate of the gymnasium to compete in the European Youth Duel Sword Cup (U17) organized by EOX in Thessaloniki in collaboration with the European Fencing Federation. It should be noted that this is the largest fencing event ever held in Greece.

The “curtain” of the first day “fell” without problems and with great satisfaction from the hosted athletes both in terms of the facilities of the HANTH and in terms of the readiness of the organizing committee.

Youth Individual (U17)

The teenagers were the first to take their place on the tracks for the individual tournament. In total, 150 athletes competed, of which 55 were Greek. Ukraine and Turkey shared the podium positions. Ukrainian Maxim Perchuk, who is No. 1 in the European rankings, confirmed his title as the favorite and lifted the winner’s cup. In the final, he prevailed over the 14-year-old Turkish Doruk Erolcevic, who until 27/1 was at No. 199 in the European rankings.

With the second place he won in Thessaloniki, he will also have the corresponding ranking “jump”. Ukrainian Maxim Gula and Turkish Yigit Cetinkaya climbed to the third step of the podium. The awards were given by Voula Patoulidou, Deputy Regional Governor of ME Thessaloniki and “gold” Olympic medalist in Barcelona in 1992, Angelos Charisteas, Deputy Regional Governor of digital governance ME Thessaloniki and football player of the “golden” team of 2004, Ioannis Lignos, president of the Hellenic Fencing Federation, and Christos Grollios, member of the Board of Directors of EOX and chairman of the Northern Greece committee.

The winners’ podium:

Youth team (U17)

In total, 76 gymnasts competed in 19 different teams. The Ukrainian team, after going 1-3 in the juniors, went 1-2 in the junior team and showed that it remains a very strong force in fencing, despite the understandable problems it faces due to the war. The two best teams of the country dueled in the final and the final winner was the second team with 45-42. The bronze medal went to the Bulgarian gymnasts, who beat the Israelis 45-43. Mr. Lignos and Mr. Grollios awarded the medals to the athletes.
