In an emergency meeting last Saturday night, the Israeli security cabinet decided, among other things, to end the payment of benefits, social security and health insurance for the families of terrorists.
The Israeli security cabinet announced on the night of Saturday to Sunday measures which, among other things, deprive “terrorist families” of their rights, after two attacks in East Jerusalem, one of which – last Friday night – resulted in the death of seven people.
In an emergency meeting last Saturday night after the attacks, the council decided, among other things, to end the payment of benefits, social security and health insurance for families, to “pay the terrorists and those who support them”, according to an official announcement.
The text announces the revocation of these rights for “families of terrorists who support terrorism” and the upcoming submission of a bill with the aim of canceling “the Israeli identities” that members of this category of families may possess. It is not explained how exactly it will be certified if a family “supports” “terrorism”.
At the start of his close-knit cabinet, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government’s response to the Palestinian attacks of the past two days would be “strong” and “immediate.”
The measures announced are broadly in line with proposals by his political partners on the far right, which allowed him to regain power in late December, following elections the previous month.
They specifically target Israeli Arabs, in other words Palestinians who have Israeli citizenship, as well as Palestinians who have the status of residents of East Jerusalem, a sector of the holy city for believers of three religions that Israel has occupied and annexed. Resident status means that the same rights and obligations are recognized to the beneficiaries as Israeli citizens.
Capturing scenes of jubilation and celebration in Palestinian towns after a Palestinian gunman killed seven people outside a Jewish settler synagogue in east Jerusalem, the security cabinet also announced it had agreed to take “measures to strengthen the settlements.” Among other things, it becomes easier and faster to obtain firearms licenses. Further measures will be announced in the coming days.
The establishment of Jewish settlers in the West Bank is considered illegal by the UN, which has been calling incessantly—in vain—for it to stop.
The attack on the synagogue followed a “preemptive” Israeli operation in Jenin with at least 9 dead, including a 60-year-old civilian, and 20 injured.
