Judge suspends Grêmio organizer and bans bleachers after invasion

by

After Grêmio’s fans invaded their stadium’s lawn last Sunday (31), due to the defeat by Palmeiras and the team’s bad phase, the club will have to play without fans in the derby against Internacional this Saturday (6), at 7pm. The team also had part of its stadium interdicted and had its organized teams suspended.

The match against the rival is scheduled for Beira-Rio, home of Colorado.

The decision has already been taken in two areas, both in the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) and also by the Court of Supporters of the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul.

First, the Sports Court ruled last Tuesday (3), in an injunction, that Grêmio will have to play its matches behind closed gates and will not have the right to support in games as a visitor until the invasion episode is judged — yet there is no date for this to happen.

Then, on Thursday (4), the Fans’ Court went further: it reiterated the ban on Grêmio fans in the match, but also suspended the organized tricolor fans and banned the north stands of Arena do Grêmio.

“I have no doubts in stating that the benefits, limited to the possibility of being at the stadium and watching the game, do not compensate for the risk that innocent people may be subjected to,” said judge Marco Aurélio Martins Xavier, from the Court.

In the victory of Palmeiras over Grêmio by 3-1, last Sunday, Grêmio fans invaded the field after the final whistle and destroyed the VAR’s cabin. It only left the lawn after the arrival of the Rio Grande do Sul Military Brigade.

After the game ended, Grêmio and Palmeiras fans also exchanged punches on the side of the partition that separated the local and visiting public. Because of the barrier, there was no more serious confrontation.

The gremista revolt happened because the team is threatened by relegation in the Brazilian Championship.

In addition to the loss to Palmeiras, this Wednesday (3) the team was defeated 2-1 by Atlético-MG, favorite for the title, in Belo Horizonte.

Grêmio is currently in the penultimate position in the table, with just 26 points in 28 games. First out of the relegation zone, Bahia has 33.

The Grêmio team has ten more matches to play until the end of the Brazilian Nationals.
