This Thursday (2) the 23rd edition of the Brazil Olympic Awards honored the athletes who shone for the country in 2022, such as Alison dos Santos, Piu, and gymnast Rebeca Andrade, awarded the title of Best Athletes of the Year.

Over the decades, some of them and many others had their stories and deeds told by journalist Edgard Alves (1948-2022), also honored during the ceremony organized by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), at Cidade das Artes, in Rio de Janeiro .

Reporter and columnist for Sheethe died in February last year, aged 73.

Yara, Edgard’s widow, recalled that her husband lived for his profession. “Since 1987, his whole life, he has only talked about sports and the Olympics.”

Daughter Aline described her surprise when she understood her father’s importance in Olympic journalism. “I didn’t know it was that big.”

Edgard participated as special envoy of the Sheet covering seven Olympics (Montréal-1976, Moscow-1980, Atlanta-1996, Sydney-2000, Athens-2004, Beijing-2008 and Rio-2016) and five editions of Pan American Games.

“He traveled a lot. He spent a lot of time in the newsroom. I remember seeing him leaving home early in the morning and returning only at night”, said his son Leandro.

The journalist began his career in Sheet in December 1967.

“Edgard was a very dear person in the newsroom”, said Roberto Dias, secretary of the newsroom Sheet. “Several people learned to like sports because of Edgard.”

In addition to the journalist, the Brazilian Olympic Committee also produced video tributes to Pelé (1940-2022), Éder Jofre (1936-2022), Roberto Dinamite (1954-2023) and Isabel Salgado (1960-2022).

At the end of the ceremony, the two winners of the Best Athletes of the Year award were presented.

In the men’s category, the winner was Alison dos Santos, Piu, 22, from São Paulo. He ended the 2022 season undefeated in the 400 m hurdles, having won the seven stages of the Diamond League he competed in, in addition to the World Championship title.

“Seeing that you are an inspiration even for those who don’t practice a sport is a satisfaction. We do it with pride and will because we know it’s worth it”, stated Alison.

In the female category, the winner was gymnast Rebeca Andrade, 23, world champion in the all-around and bronze on the floor. It was São Paulo’s second Brazil Olympic Award trophy, as she also won in 2021.

“It makes me proud to be able to represent gymnastics and Brazil, here and abroad. I want to thank Chico, my coach, who is almost like a father to me. I may have been chosen today, but all athletes are athletes of the year”, said Rebecca.
