Zanetti: “I turned down Real for Inter, nowhere would I find myself like here”

by

In a very interesting interview in Italian Tuttosport proceeded its once great leader and current vice president Inter, Javier Zanetti. The 49-year-old Argentine talked about his first steps in football, his childhood in Argentina and of course his devotion to the Nerazzurri, while among other things he did not hesitate to recall some unknown transfer stories.

The 5-time champion of Italy with the jersey of the Milan team, confided in what happened in the summer of 2001 and the rumors that wanted him close to Real Madrid and he did not hesitate to reveal two very interesting stories about him Sir Alex Ferguson and the Carles Puyol.

For Real Madrid:

“I had spoken to her then sports director Real Madrid, Jorge Valdanohe wanted me in Madrid, everything was arranged but at the last minute I informed Moratti that I want to stay in Inter. They had offered me a much bigger contract than what I had here. Even though the money was more in Madrid, I thought about my family, my relationship with the fans and of course the fact that this is where I wanted to leave my mark. I thought that if I went to Real I would be one of the many and I would definitely win titles but I wanted to do it here and that was one of the many important and difficult decisions I made.”

For Carles Puyol:

“I’m the reason his career took off, he always tells me that when he sees me. He was in the Barcelona first team and had started to make some first team appearances, then Louis van Gaal had called him into his office and told him he had found the strongest right back in the world, Javier Zanetti, if he couldn’t sign him and bring him to Barcelona then he will keep Puyol. Whenever we meet he always pleases me.”

For Sir Alex Ferguson:

“I had also been approached by Manchester United in 2001 or 2002 I don’t remember exactly. I was at the airport with my wife Paula and then I saw Ferguson. He approached me and asked me when my contract ends at Inter, but I was happy in Milan, despite the fact that they were strange and difficult years for the team. Anywhere else I might have had a great career but nowhere would I have found myself like at Inter.”
