Point guard Yago, 23, from the Brazilian basketball team, was harassed in a game in Spain. Defending the colors of Ratiopharm Ulm, from Germany, he was insulted by a fan of Club Joventut Badalona, in Badalona, in a valid EuroCup match held last Tuesday (7).
Images show the woman repeatedly screaming in the direction of the athlete. Positioned near the sideline, she says the word “mono”, monkey, with laughter. These videos circulated in Spain and generated reactions from journalists, athletes and even Joventut Badalona, which said it “vehemently rejects any behavior […] offensive, racist and/or xenophobic”.
The club claimed to have taken the images to the competent authorities. Yago, on the other hand, claimed not to have noticed the curses in the heat of the match. When he found out about it, he showed revolt, demanded measures from the organization of the championship and promised that he would also play for those who suffer from racism.
“Thank God, I didn’t hear it at the time, because I don’t know what my reaction would be. I had never experienced this in my life in Brazil or in other countries. I can’t understand why. It’s revolting and sad, we are very far from awareness that there is no room for that kind of attitude,” he said in a statement.
The player received support from old teammates, such as Rafael Hetssheimeir, with whom he played at Flamengo, and from Aleksandar Petrovic, who was his coach in the national team. “The offenses suffered by Yago are absolutely reprehensible and the miscreants should be expelled from the stadium forever,” the Croatian wrote.
The CBB (Brazilian Basketball Confederation) published a note of repudiation and said it will send the EuroCup organization a request for an investigation “so that those responsible for the crime are identified and punished in the sporting and civil spheres”. The COB (Brazilian Olympic Committee) condemned the fan: “May she be punished!”.
