The preparation in Kazakhstan is completed and the National Women’s Saber leaves for Tashkent

Dora Gundura, Claire Benou and Marina Paizi have been training hard in the last week at a strong training camp in Almaty, Kazakhstan ahead of the next target competition, the World Cup in Tashkent in neighboring Uzbekistan between February 10-12.

The preparation camp at the Olympic center of Kazakhstan was well organized and the top gymnasts from the host country, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Lithuania attended.

On Wednesday night they left for Tashkent in view of their upcoming competitive commitments. The fourth member of the team, Despina Georgiadou, remained at her base in Orléans, France for preparation and will travel in the next few days directly to Uzbekistan to join the Greek mission.

In Tashkent, the Greek quartet will compete in both the individual (10-11/2) and team (12/2) events. Paizi and Benou will compete in the qualifying round of the individual next Friday with the aim of entering the draw of the “64” which will be held next Saturday.

Georgiadou and Gundoura are guaranteed spots in the top 64 thanks to their world rankings (third and 11th respectively). In total, 150 athletes from all over the world have declared to compete.

In next Sunday’s group stage, the Greek team will compete for the first time in 2023 and for the second time in the 2022-2023 season after finishing ninth at the World Cup in Algeria on November 14. The National epee team is currently ranked 13th in the world and the aim is to further improve its position in the world rankings ahead of the start of the Olympic qualification period for Paris 2024, which starts on 3 April 2023.

Against her in Tashkent she will have 19 other teams, including the 13 who are currently leading the world rankings.
