Covid-19 leads CBF to give up on Futsal Copa América in Brazil

by

The CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) gave up holding the 2022 Futsal America Cup in Brazil. The competition was scheduled for the period between January 29th and February 6th, at the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro.

In an official letter sent on Monday (27) to the president of Conmebol (South American Football Confederation), Alejandro Domínguez, the Brazilian organization cites the increase in Covid-19 cases and restrictions on the movement of travelers to justify the request for cancellation. The request was revealed by the GE portal and confirmed by leaf.

The preparation of the document had the participation of the National Football Doctors Commission (CNMF). The main impasse would be a demand made by Conmebol in the sense that the rules for the entry into the country of athletes, technical commissions, referees, members of the organizing committee and others involved in the event are made more flexible.

According to current regulations, visitors must present proof of vaccination against Covid-19 when disembarking at airports or crossing land borders, with the exception of those prevented from receiving doses for medical reasons and residents in countries that are proven to lack immunization .

Negative RT-PCR test performed within 72 hours prior or negative antigen testing within the prior 24 hours is also required. Those who are exempt from the vaccination passport must undergo quarantine for up to 14 days.

Conmebol’s request was not well received by CBF. In the official letter, the Brazilian organization mentions “the difficulty of obtaining an exception by the date indicated” and states that it is “recommended” to transfer the competition to another venue. The South American confederation has yet to manifest itself.

The CBF’s stance had been quite different in May of this year, still during Rogério Caboclo’s administration, when Brazil offered to host the Copa América football after Argentina and Colombia withdrew, also due to the pandemic. At the time, CBF and Conmebol had the support of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, to carry out the event in the country.

Caboclo was removed after allegations of moral and sexual harassment, and Ednaldo Rodrigues assumed the presidency of the CBF, at the end of August.

Driven by the omicron variant, Covid-19’s numbers have been increasing rapidly. Data from the Our World in Data platform, linked to the University of Oxford (United Kingdom), indicated last Tuesday (28) a moving average of 854,603 new daily cases across the planet: a new record in the pandemic. In Brazil, the new strain would already be responsible for more than 30% of the contaminations, according to the Todos pela Saúde Institute.

Climbing has also had an impact on the world of sport. Authorities in Spain, France and Germany have again restricted the capacity to attend sporting events. Clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona face outbreaks among their players, and several games have already been postponed.

Last week, the Brazilian futsal team met the opponents it would face in its 2022 Copa America group: Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile. Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela, Bolivia and Peru were in the other key.

Current champion, Brazil is the biggest winner of the competition, with ten titles conquered. Argentina appears in a distant second with two.
