In a state of amok, a fugitive who ransacked his home killed at least 12 members of his family, including at least seven children, and then ended his life, three Iraqi security sources said.
The tragedy unfolded in the village of al-Rasajed, in the province of Babylon, when men from the special forces and the intelligence service tried to break into the house of the man, who was suspected of terrorism.
“The accused killed all the occupants of the house,” said a local source.
Two sources who spoke to AFP gave similar descriptions of the incident, but the number of victims they reported differed: the first source, local security services, said 19 dead, including the perpetrator and 12 children, his nieces , aged from 2 to 12 years. An Interior Ministry official said 12 people were killed, including seven children and two women.
Both, however, reported that three members of the security forces were injured.
An intelligence source said the suspect was a member of Islamic State, as was one of his cousins.
Iraq announced its victory over the ISIS at the end of 2017. But the jihadists continue to attack security forces, mainly in the north.
