Chinese government bans tattoos on players called up for football selection

by

Players called up for the Chinese football team may not have tattoos on their bodies. Those who already have them will have to remove them, according to information from the AFP.

The measure, determined by the country’s government, has the declared objective of curbing habits considered “common” among young people.

It is the latest step taken by China’s politicians against what they see as outside influences on youth. In recent months, measures have been taken against online games and TV shows considered Western, such as reality shows.

The determination to soccer players was published by the Ministry of Sports last Tuesday (28) and speaks of “formal prohibition of making new tattoos”.

“Those who already have tattoos are advised to erase them. In the case of particular circumstances, the tattoos must be covered during training and competitions,” the statement says.

Base team coaches are prohibited from calling up tattooed players. Body painting is a bad habit in much of Chinese society.

There were cases of players being sent to military camps where they could receive Marxist orientation.

China is in contention for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers but has little chance of qualifying. The team has won five points after six rounds and is in 5th place in Group B. To at least go to the repechage, they need to finish third, a position occupied by Australia, which has 11 points.

China’s only World Cup appearance came in 2002, when it was eliminated from the group stage after losing every game.
