In the Olympic Museum of Athens he was handed his medal by his family Alexandrou Nikolaidis, who passed away prematurely after a battle with cancer. The medal will be placed in the specially designed display case created in the “Athens 2004” hall, as a mark of honor to his achievements, next to important memorabilia from the 2004 Olympics that were a milestone in modern Greek history.
The silver medals of the Olympian, following his own wishes, were auctioned and the proceeds were given to children’s charities. After the auction, they were returned to his family, who donated his medal from the Athens 2004 Olympiad to the Athens Olympic Museum for five years, so that visitors can admire it and be inspired by his achievements and ethos. The moving event of handover was framed by students and teachers.
The medals and personal belongings of the Olympians and Paralympians that adorn the Museum’s exhibition are a tribute to the Greek athletes and are among its most valuable exhibits. The Museum, through the Permanent Exhibition and its actions, aims to introduce the Principles and Values of the Olympic Movement, to inspire and motivate the young, but also the older ones to get to know the history of sports and Olympism.
