Fabregas: “Hardest decision of my life when I left Arsenal, I hurt Wenger”

by

Describe it as particularly painful and difficult Cesc Fabregas his decision to transfer from the Arsenal in Barcelona in the summer of 2011.

As he pointed out, if it wasn’t for the team of his city and the one he loved since he was a child, he probably would never have left the “gunners”, while he pointed out that years later he has regretted this decision, as he now considers it a bit hasty.

He also remembered the summer of 2014 when he left the “Blaugrana” for another London team, the Chelseastressing that his former team had the right if they wanted to include him again in their team, but o Arsene Wenger appeared negative in the possibility of the return of the Spanish midfielder to the “Emirates”

The Spaniard, who now plays in Italy’s second division with Como, had moved to the Island on behalf of Arsenal aged just 16, in the summer of 2003 becoming an integral part of the team for around six years making a total of 303 appearances with the North London outfit, with 57 goals and 95 assists in all competitions.

The words of the 35-year-old central midfielder in detail about his transfer to the Catalans:

“I always say that this was the hardest decision of my life. For my heart it was easy because I always wanted to play for the first team of Barcelona. It was my city, my past, the dream I had since I was a child to play for Barca. But really it was very very very difficult because Arsenal had given me so much, I felt so much love from everyone, the club, the world, everyone. The trust they gave me from such a young age was truly unique. It was incredibly difficult to speak to Arsene Wenger, the man who gave me everything, and to tell him that I wanted to go back to Barcelona.”

What he said about his return to English football and Arsene Wenger’s bitterness:

“In the contract I signed with Barcelona, there was a clause that said if I leave Arsenal will have the first and last say on signing me. When it was now definite that I would leave Barcelona, I knocked on Arsenal’s door and for about a week they told me they would look into the matter. Finally, I contacted Wenger and he told me that the team has many great players in my position like Mesut Ozil and to use me he would have to take time away from some other event that would alter the balance of the team. To be honest, I think he was hurt by the way I left.”

On his transfer to Chelsea and Jose Mourinho:

“At that time I had a few options and one of them was Chelsea. I spoke to Mourinho, I met him and what he told me made me feel really good, he told me that he wants me to be the leader of his team and I felt it was the best choice for me.”

Regarding his three years in Barcelona:

“If it wasn’t for Barcelona I would never have made this decision. Timing is very decisive in life and especially in football and sports. Looking back I realize that my decision was a bit hasty, maybe I should have waited a little longer so that I would be more mature to succeed Xavi”.
