AEK: It was a streak and it goes…

The “devil’s week” had the worst possible ending for AEK, as the defeat in the derby against Olympiakos ended a dream run of five months. The three goals of “Piraeus” dashed the hopes of “Union” to start the race of playoffs at the top of the standings with the result being, if nothing else, quite… unexpected based on the image that Matias Almeida’s team has shown recently.

After the emotional opening ceremony of the “OPAP Arena”, AEK welcomed Ionikos, managing to make… a premiere in the best way by winning with the emphatic 4-1. Then followed the difficult victory over Atromitos with a score of 1-0, while the dynamics of AEK’s new “home” swept away PAOK as well, with Almeida’s team prevailing with relative ease in the “double-header” derby with a score of 2- 0. OFI was next, who left New Philadelphia with a 3-0 defeat and the “castle” was already starting to lay even stronger foundations.

With the return from the break, thanks to the World Cup, Matias Almeida’s team welcomed Lamia, which they easily defeated 3-0 while in the top derby against Panathinaikos on January 8, Orbelin Pineda’s goal was enough to extend the streak.

Then AEK easily cleaned Panaitolikos 4-1, while the match with Aris turned into a healthy walk with the score stopping at 3-0. The last two “victims” who succumbed at the home of AEK were Levadeiakos and Asteras Tripoli who were defeated with a score of 3-0 and 2-0 respectively.
