Novak Djokovic lives in a… second Australia, this time in the USA. The number 1 tennis player did not secure a visa from the US government because the law banning foreigners from entering the country who are not vaccinated against Covid-19 is still in place.
Djokovic had entered the Miami Open. Organizers, however, failed to convince the US government to grant an exemption to the top athlete, leaving him out.
“We tried to get Novak Djokovic to get an exemption, but that couldn’t happen,” tournament director James Blake told the Tennis Channel. “Obviously, we’re one of the top tournaments in the world, we’d like to have the best players that can play. We did everything we could. We have tried to talk to the government, but that is not in our hands,” he added.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSandis and the state’s two U.S. senators were among those calling on the Biden administration to allow Djokovic to enter the U.S. to compete in the tournament he has won six times, but no intervention has been able to overturn the scenery.
The US currently bans unvaccinated foreigners from entering the country, a policy expected to be lifted on May 11. Therefore, Djokovic can play in the US Open in the summer.
