In the sixth international saber event of this season, bwin team’s Dora Goundoura and Despina Georgiadou finished third and fifth respectively in the women’s individual saber event at the World Cup in Belgium.
Dora Gundura comfortably passed the first round on the main board of “64”. She defeated 22-year-old Italian Claudia Rotili (FIE No. 61) 15-9, who had eliminated her teammate Athenaida Mavrikakis in Friday’s qualifier. She then defeated 19-year-old Hungarian Sugar Katinka Batai (FIE No20) 15-8, who had climbed to the top of the podium at the Acropolis Cup in Athens in early March.
In the round of 16, she defeated Azera Valeria Bolsakova (FIE No47) 15-9 and took a place in the quarter-finals against world No4, the Spanish Luthia Martin-Portuguese. The match was uneventful in the first half, but then Gundura kept up their pace, won crucial and hard-fought points and cruised to a coveted 15-10 win.
With her victory, this Greek champion made it 3-1 in the matches between them.
In addition to winning the bronze medal, Gundura will add to her points collection in the world rankings.
