It has been confirmed that at the third European Games to be held in Krakow and Małopolska, Poland, June 21-July 2, 2023, Panagiotis Gionis, Yiannis Sgouropoulos, Katerina Toliou and Elisavet Terpou will compete in singles for our country.
They are the first two of the Greek colors in the international evaluation table, they entered the participations based on the numerical limit of athletes from this criterion, while Sgouropoulos also met another condition having placed last year in Munich in positions 17-32 of the singles in European Individual Championships.
There will be no Greek representation in the team of the European Games this time, while the table tennis program includes the mixed doubles, always according to the standards of the Olympic Games.
It is also definitive that the technical guidance of our four champions will be undertaken by the national federal men’s coach, Kostas Vatsaklis.
The competent authority is the ETTU. It has long taken out the so-called Quota, i.e. the ratio, the quota of places for the events and, through the Organizing Committee of the Krakow and Malopolska 2023 European Games, sent it to the European Olympic Committees. This is how the Greek Olympic Committee received the notification that the two men and the two women have the right to participate in the individual events.
E.F.O.E.P.A., in turn, filled out the confirmation form and a few days ago the participations were confirmed by name for Gionis, Sgouropoulos, Toliou and Terpou. The world ranking of February 28, 2023 has counted.
In the event that a replacement is needed along the way, it can be done by another Greek athlete only with Sgouropoulos, because the four-time European champion of young ages has also met the criterion of entry into the round of “32” at the 2022 European Championship.
In total, up to 76 men and 76 women can participate in the individual event of the European Games. In general, a country can show up to four athletes-four gymnasts if it also takes part in the team event.
