Ceferin: “No one should forget that football is the people’s sport”

by

With harsh words for those who support her venture European Super Leaguethe UEFA president spoke again, Alexander Ceferin.

As part of his re-election to the presidency of European football’s confederation as a sole candidate, the Slovenian insisted on the need for national leagues to remain the bedrock of the sport, while lashing out at those leading the push to create the Super League.

What the UEFA president said in detail:

“Football does not belong to anyone. It actually belongs to all of us. The general interest must be more important than the interests of three clubs, two brokers and their representative. Those promoting the Super League project claim they want to save football. They can’t fool anyone.”

“The Super League has the role that the bad wolf had in the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood. It’s like a cartel that doesn’t count on meritocracy and democracy. They put the money above the trophies. It is cynicism against morality. No one should forget that football is the people’s sport. National leagues must remain the bedrock of football. All countries have understood what is at stake. Football today more than ever needs the support of those who love it”.
