Testimony of Hapoel’s friend from the events in Liosia: “They threw stones and flares at us”

by

A friend of the Israelis in the middle of his country is speaking about murderous duels between AEK fans and those of Hapoel Jerusalem, in the Ano Liosia stadium.

The Hapoel fan pointed out that there were families with children in the stands, but that did not deter the hooligans to throw flares and stones at themwhile several parents hid their children in the toilets of the stadium, so as not to be injured.

In detail what the Hapoel fan said to “Walla”:

While we were in town we didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary. We were in taverns, we sang and everything was good. Even while going to the stadium everything was safe. I believe that not even our Greek sports fans expected so many. We packed our stands and when Hapoel started the match with a 7-0 run, that’s when the temperature started to rise.

It is not the first time we have had anti-Semitic behavior from AEK fans. They had hung Hezbollah banners in the stands and called us “murderers”. But, when the match didn’t start well for them, then they threw a flare towards our stand. Unlike the huge OAKA, this stadium is smaller, so we had objects thrown at us from close range.

Some of them tried to get into our stand and I believe that if they got past the police forces, then there would be… carnage. The scene was surreal: Police fighting fans wearing gas masks, helmets and shields, and others wearing scarves.

Afterwards, the AEK fans came even closer to us and threw bottles at us. Then they threw another flare at us and later stones were thrown at us from the press area! This was not a battle between organized fans of two teams. In our stand we had many families, who felt threatened. Parents ran to hide their children in the toilets so they wouldn’t get hurt. The police tried to stop the hooligans and threw stun grenades, but this… inflamed the situation even more».
