Preparation in Japan for Gundura and in Hong Kong for Georgiadou

by

The current competition season is, so far, an excellent one for the Greek colors in the epee, as Greece has been present on all the podiums of the top six events that have been held. Counting Georgiadou’s bronze at the World Championships in Cairo in July 2022, Greece has had a representative on the podium at the last seven top women’s saber events.

From now on, however, all tournaments will become even more difficult given that the Seoul Grand Prix will start the season of collecting points for the Olympic qualification for Paris in 2024. Despina Georgiadou is ranked No. 2 in the world and Dora Gundura at No. 6 and they begin their journey to secure Olympic qualification in the individual.

In view of the important competition in Seoul, the two athletes decided to adapt to the conditions of the Asian country with a ten-day preparation in nearby countries. Gundura, together with the national epee coach, Thanasis Delenikas, traveled on Easter Sunday to Japan, specifically to Fukuoka, where they will participate in a training camp organized by the Japanese Fencing Federation.

The camp is international and athletes from Japan, France, USA, Spain, Germany, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Canada and Great Britain will participate.

Georgiadou, on the other hand, will spend this time in Hong Kong, the place chosen by Christian Bauer to prepare his academy, in which top sportsmen and women from different countries of the world train. They will remain there until April 25, then move to Seoul for the third and final Grand Prix of the season.
