Alonso: “I do not consider it unfair that I have won only two F1 championships”

by

A large interview in which he spoke about his career and what he has achieved so far, he gave Fernando Alonso, with its experienced pilot Alpine to state categorically that you do not feel wronged by the two championships he has won, given his great potential.

On whether his talent deserves more championships: “No I do not think so. I believe that you get what you deserve. Some may have won championships or victories while there are better drivers on the track, but there have also been many extremely talented drivers I have encountered in Kart or Formula 3 who have never reached F1 – and that is also unfair.

Something similar happens in F1, we have 20 amazing drivers that 90% of them will never win a GP, and that’s unfair because they definitely deserve it. I was lucky enough to win two world championships, and play in Le Mans, Daytona, WEC, so I lived a lot longer than I could have dreamed of when I started my career. And so, I will never feel unlucky with my results. ”

For the differences between Ferrari and McLaren: “They have always had a different philosophy. At Renault you can find the family environment and the friendly approach. At Ferrari things are a little more passionate, and a little more chaotic with the Mediterranean DNA of its people. “McLaren is a little more serious, more accurate in everything, but it may lack a little communication inside, even though it is a highly professional environment.”

For the most competitive car ever in F1: “I think I had the best car three times. Initially, in the first half of 2005. McLaren was faster, with Kimi Raikkonen, but did not have the credibility. Then, in the first 6-7 races of 2006 I think we had the best car. Then Ferrari, and perhaps Bridgestone together, created a very fast car. In 2007 [με τη McLaren] I think they were equivalent [με τη Ferrari], I do not think we clearly had the fastest car. “We won the title on two of those three occasions, so I think things went well.”

For the two championships of 2005-’06: “The most important thing for us, initially, was that in 2005 we won a championship that we did not expect. Because at that time Renault was a team that was in the process of continuous improvement, and we did not consider that it had yet reached the level of claiming the championship. So, this was a fantastic surprise. In the second championship, I think the most important thing was the opportunity to fight with Mikael [Σουμάχερ]».

For the reasons of his departure from F1 at the end of 2018: “At that stage of my career I needed some different challenges. I was tempted to run LeMans, I also ran Indy500 in 2017 before I quit [από τη F1], I had in my head all these challenges of participating in different categories, of competing with other top drivers in different types of races, and I felt a challenge for myself.

I did not stop being in love with Formula 1, I just felt like I was wasting my time in F1 at that time. I did not have the opportunity to claim victories, but I felt the desire to follow the challenge of different kinds of games. So I felt it was the right time, but maybe it would have been even better if I had decided in 2015 or 2016. But I did not have the crystal ball to see what would happen in 2017-’18 “.

For his return and the 2021 season: “I enjoyed the whole year with the team, on and off the track, and I am very happy. I had the luxury of going back to sports the moment I decided. I stopped when I decided, I came back when I decided. This is a great luxury. A very small group of people can lead to F1, and it is not easy to have such opportunities. And as the season went on, with our continuous improvement and our very strong finish, there was no better way to prepare for 2022 “.

For the difficulties of its adaptation: “The biggest challenge was probably the front tires, and the different philosophy of each team with the front suspension, the steering system, the information given to it by the steering system. Each team is unique in this. “Also, the structure of the tires changed from 2020 to ’21, and that was a challenge for everyone – and especially for those drivers who changed teams, but also for me who was absent from the sport for two years”.

For his sense of happiness in F1: “I think after 2007, when I was with Hamilton on an English team, everyone is surprised by how happy I feel in each team. I was answering these questions when I went to Ferrari, again when I went back to McLaren, in 2019 when I left the sport, but again now. But they were wrong conclusions. “I am very happy now, but I felt just as good in previous years.”
