As well as extermination penalties are foreseen for the players who got involved in Real-Partizan

by

THE Euroleague will announce within the day the penalties for the players who participated in fights that broke out 1:40 before the end in the second match between Real and Partizan for the playoffs of the event. The “bells” vary, from the exclusion of a few matches, to annual or even definitive ones from the event. The independent judge of the Euroleague will decide on the fate of those involved.

The Euroleague regulations separate offenses into serious and mild ones. The first case includes events like yesterday’s, that is, violence, a definitive match stoppage, threats or any violent behavior. The players who will be judged to have participated in any of the above, face fines from 30,000 to 280,000 euros (!), but also a ban from one to four years or for three or more games or another lifetime ban from the EuroLeague.

The mildest offenses include stoppage of play, verbal abuse, refusal to comply with referees’ instructions and violent behavior that endangers other players. In these cases, a simple recommendation up to a fine of 30,000 euros is provided, as well as a ban from participation in the Euroleague for up to one year or a suspension for up to five games.

The most recent skirmish, but not of this magnitude, had occurred in 2013 in the SEF and in the match between Olympiakos and Galatasaraywhen Giorgos Printezis and Mirza Begits got hands on with Pops Mensa Bonsu. At the time, the Slovenian center was banned for four games and fined 15,000 euros, while the Greek ace and the Briton, who later moved from AEK, were banned from three games and fined 10,000 euros.

It is unknown whether the EuroLeague will punish all players according to the letter of the law or show leniency in order not to distort the competition at such a critical juncture, in the playoffs and just before the Final 4. For example, a three-game suspension in Pander or Lessor would be damning for Partizan. However, it is already said that those players who entered the pitch just to separate those who were beaten, will not be punished.
