An important change was announced by FIBA on the pitches for the World Cup of summer (25/8-10/9).
The fact that the matches of the first and final stages would be held in the Philippines and in capacity of almost 50 thousand spectators in the “Philippines Arena”, was one of the main attractions of the event. However, as decided on the sidelines of the draw (which will take place on Saturday), eventually the Philippines Arena will only be used for two matches of the first phase.
The concern, which led the World Federation to this decision, concerns the following prerequisite: Ensuring the smooth movement of fans to and from the stadium. Although the construction of a new road connecting Metro Manila to the Philippines Arena was completed in 2021, their functionality could only be tested after November 2022 due to the pandemic.
Since then, various events have been organized at the facility, where very serious transportation and travel issues have been identified. Despite the improvements made under the control of engineers and transport experts, the Council concluded that for an event with multiple zones of activity within one day, such as the final phase of the World Cup, the requirements and high standards to ensure the experience of athletes and spectators would not be satisfied.
The Philippines Arena will host two World Cup group stage matches, but not the finals.
