First title step for the spirited Panathinaikos in the thriller with Olympiakos!

He did it again against Olympiakos and the spirited Panathinaikos got the upper hand in the final series! The team of Yiannis Kalmazidis, in a thriller match which was marred by the evacuation of the closed Agios Thomas, due to smoke, did not “chew” and prevailed 3-1 set in the first Women’s Volleyball League final.

Big derby from the third set onwards with the home team acrobats between the tie break and victory at the moment when Olympiacos was giving their soul for the equaliser. Third win in as many matches against Olympiakos this season for the “clover” who wants to make the 2-0 in turn her Wednesday (3/5) to take a big title lead.

The match

It started in a dynamic way first set for Panathinaikos with its players Yannis Kalmazidis not to lose their cool from Olympiakos’ quick 3-1 and reach the 8-3 with an impressive 7-0 run. The “red and white” made several mistakes with Koumboura and Tsitsigianni not having a clear mind at the moment when Anthoulis and Gross with successful attacks took advantage of the excellent creation by Papafotiou bringing the difference to the striking 22-9. The “greens” comfortably finished the set, with Olympiakos having no answers either through the block or through the reception with Martha Anthoulis to shape it 25-10 for the 1-0 “clover”.

Olympiacos entered the second set with a different philosophy and with the excellent one Bunch but also Emmanuilidou reached +4 (3-7) for the first time, forcing Yiannis Kalmazidis to call a time-out. However, the “green” socket was found in a bad state with the Bunch to continue to take advantage of the home team’s mistakes and widen the score to 5-13. From that point onwards she took action Vilma Salas which with three decisive attacks brought Olympiakos to +11. Anthouli received several blocks from Winters with the American closing out the set with an ace making 10-25 for the 1-1 of the “red and whites”.

Role reversal and in third set with Panathinaikos “tightening” the block as a result of which Olympiacos fell into several mistakes and the score came to 7-1 for the “greens” with Miceli asking for a time-out. Yannis Kalmazidis’ team lost its rhythm as after Koumboura’s ace and her block Shine in Anthoulis, Olympiacos came back making it 10-7 after the great score of Panathinaikos. The contest continued in the set with the visitors coming back from hits by Carraro and Koumboura, but two consecutive points by Grotous and a hit by Anthoulis brought the score to 16-12 for Panathinaikos. The players of Yannis Kalmazidis looked cool even when the Bunch reduced to a point for Olympiakos (19-18) but the streak of the “greens” extended thanks to the excellent Anthoulis and Anae’s ace for the 23-19. Olympiacos came back with another block of Salas in Anthoulis, who however then got her blood back with an excellent attack, while then Medić with an ace made the 25-21 for the “greens” 2-1.

After almost an hour of stoppage in the Agios Thomas stadium due to the evacuation of the stadium requested by referee Mylonakis due to a torch, the match continued behind closed doors and the game turned into a rodeo!

So the derby lasted for good at fourth set with the two teams matching the score until 5-5. The visitors took a small lead with Emmanuilidou and Koumboura beating the “green” block for the +2 (5-7). The “red and whites” found scores several times with Emmanouilidou, together with Koumboura and Salas they again brought Olympiacos ahead with two 14-16 but the “greens” with their own series took the lead with Gross and Flower to do 19-18. The match, however, turned into a thriller after Olympiacos overturned the score from 21-18, bringing the match to a 22-22 balance. From that point on the match became a hot potato for both teams as the lead kept changing hands.

Gross and Anthoulis, along with Salas and Koumboura, fought huge duels over the net, with block outs following one another, but Salas’ misfired shot and Gross’s clever attack gave victory and the upper hand to Panathinaikos in view of the continuation of the finals.
