The Panhellenic Fencing Championship was concluded with great success

In the same year, Nikos Kontochristopoulos and Katerina Kontochristopoulou won the Panhellenic men’s and women’s titles respectively, as they had done again in 2015 and 2019.

Katerina Kontochristopoulou (AOX Aegaleo) won her sixth career title with a 15-12 victory over Maria Chaldaiou (AXIA) in the final, getting revenge for last year’s defeat. The club of Aegaleo did 1-3-3 with the juniors Eleni Ballou and Stavrina Garifallou on the third step of the podium.

In the men’s category, Nikos Kontochristopoulos won the ninth title of his career and moved up to second place among Greek fencers with the most individual titles in a weapon together with Giorgos Tsouroutas (9 in the epee) and behind only Zisi Babanasis (11 in the epee ).

In the final, he prevailed over Yannis Tsimikles (GEF) 15-10. Giorgos Manolikas (AXIA) and Dimitris Panagopoulos (AEK) climbed to the third step of the podium.

In the team, AOX Aegaleo confirmed, for another year, its dominance. In the women, Kontochristopoulou, Garifallou, Mekra and Ballou defeated the team of Chaldaiou, Stavrakis, Piliouras and Papathanasiou from AXIA with 45-22.

In the “small” final, GE Florina (Naidi, Gerosieri, Kavvada, Sfetkou) defeated ASAO (Kourkoulos-Kousounis, Kandri, Kazagli, Ioannou) with 45-41. The same teams climbed in the same order on the men’s podium. The foursome of AOX Aigaleo with Kontochristopoulos, Tsovani, Panourgia and Gianno-Rizo defeated the team from AXIA (Manolikas, Soulios, Apostolopoulos, Gikas) in the final with 45-29.

In the “small” final, GE Florina (Doudos, Gerosideris, Tsimiklis, Nedelkos) defeated OX Glyfada (Foukas, Sofras, Maltezakis, Geiger) with 45-33 and won the bronze medal.

It is worth noting that this was the 25th women’s team title and the 14th men’s team title in the history of AOX Aegaleo and, in fact, the 20th and 11th consecutive respectively. The club’s teams remain unbeaten since 2003 and 2012.

After two finals that were judged on the smallest details, Panagiotis Theodoropoulos and Nefeli Rodopoulou were crowned champions of Greece for 2023.

After an exciting final with Giannos Markopoulos (OS Kifissias) that was decided on the last point (15-14), 17-year-old Panagiotis Theodoropoulos (AO Ariston Paanias) was named the champion of Greece in the big division for the first time.

In 2022, he had won the bronze medal, while recently he showed that he is in very good shape with the silver medal in the third Panhellenic Cup. The bronze medal went to last year’s champion, Savvas Kavadias (PAO) and the also 17-year-old Konstantinos Karabasis (AO Ariston Paanias).

In the women’s final, Nefeli Rodopoulou (AOFIPS Irida) and Andriana Theodoropoulou (AO Ariston Peanias) met for the third consecutive time after the last two cups. After three minutes the score was tied at 9-9 and – as in the previous finals – the victory was decided on the last point. Theodoropoulou happened to have the advantage but it was Rodopoulou who managed to take the last point for 10-9 and defend last year’s women’s title.

Irida also had a second athlete on the podium, Maria Hantzi, while the second bronze went to Fani Varveri of AO Theseas Heraklion.

In the women’s team, AO Ariston Paanias, with Hatzisarantou, Theodoropoulou, Tsolaki and Malissova, defended last year’s title with 33-27 against AOF IPS Irida of Rodopoulou, Chantzi, Karabini and Biza. It is the third women’s team title for the Peania club.

LO Varis (Karanika, Pagoni, Pagoni, Kalimeri) prevailed in the “small” final 45-39 against Heraklis Thessaloniki (Myronidou-Simeonidou, Molyvidou, Hatzifilippidou) and climbed to the third step of the podium.

The male fencers of OXIF (Tsokas, Raspoptsis, Hatzitipis, Zacharopoulos) returned to the first step of the podium three years after the last time (2020) and for the seventh time overall in the club’s history. In the final, they defeated AO Ariston Paanias (Theodoropoulos, Karambasis, Karagiannis, Foukas) with 45-31.

Spartakos Korinthias (Xynos, Minas, Ambalof, Papadopoulos) emerged victorious in the “small” final against OS Kifisias (Markopoulos, Binihakis, Tiktopoulos, Nikoloudis) with a score of 45-37.

The biggest upsets of this year’s Panhellenic Championship took place in the sword weapon, where the new champion and the new champion of Greece climbed for the first time in their careers to the first step of the podium.

Panagiotis Kontoideis (AEK) defeated Angelos Pagalos (E Kostea Geitona) 15-12 in the grand final. The “evergreen” Jason Durakos (Athenian Club) and the “new blood” of the men’s saber, 15-year-old Thomas-Avraam Grollios (Aris Thessaloniki), won the two bronze medals.

In the women’s category, 20-year-old Athenais Mavrikaki (AO Aspida) deservedly won the title, overcoming strong opponents. In the quarter-final, she defeated Clairi Benou (AEK) and in the final Marina Paizi (AS Victoria) in another exciting match decided in the last shot (15-14).

Despina Konstantakopoulou (OSFP) and 15-year-old Alina Kouroussi (AO Apollon Vrilissio) climbed to the third step of the podium.

After the pan-Hellenic title in junior women, OSFP won its “maiden” title in women’s epee with Konstantakopoulou, Gazepidi, Houzouri and Douka. The “red and white” defeated in the final with 45-32 the team from AO Aspida with Mavrikaki, Hatzikokinou, Gioni and Lytina.

With its victory, OSFP ended AEK’s streak of ten titles (2012-2021). In the “small” final, Kostea-Geitona Schools (Hatzakou, Hatzakou, Papapetropoulos) defeated AS Victoria (Paizi, Maragou, Geronikou, Kochrona) 45-37.

In the men, AO Ariston Paanias, with Kafataridis, Priftis and Predaris, lifted the first cup for the club in the team epee with a 45-37 victory against the AEK team (Dimitropoulos, Drepanopoulos, Kontoidis, Karagiozopoulos).

In the “small” final, AO Apollon Vrilission (Poliakov, Katsardis, Kontochristos, Divis) defeated Aris Thessaloniki (Grollios, Leoton, Leoton, Papadopoulos) 45-42 and climbed to the third step of the podium.
