Feyenoord embrace the title – Groningen relegated after 23 years!

by

Feyenoord are one breath away from winning the title, after today’s 2-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam for the 31st matchday of the Eredivisie.

Arn Sloat’s side are set to return to the top of the Netherlands for the first time since 2017 with a win against Excelsior next week.

The big star in today’s game was Sandy Jimenez, who continued his terrific scoring streak.

The 22-year-old Mexican, in his first year in the Netherlands, scored both of his team’s goals, finding the net for a seventh game in a row. In fact, he has scored ten in the last eleven matches, reaching a total of 22.

In the unfortunate news of the matchday, Groningen bid farewell to the Eredisivie after 23 consecutive years at the top level.

The “greens” drew (1-1) with Go Ahead Eagles and were ten points behind Excelsior and Emmen who are tied for 15th and 16th place.

Since 2000, which returned and established itself in the big division, Groninger has won a Cup in 2015. From its “guts” it produced Arjen Robben and Virgil Van Dijk, while it was the first European stop in the career of Luis Suarez.
