The biggest executioner of Santos in recent years, Palmeiras won 2-0 and ended a 12-year taboo without winning in Vila Belmiro for the Brazilian Championship, this Sunday (7). With goals from Rony and Raphael Veiga, the team alviverde continues in the fight for the national title.

With the result, Palmeiras reaches 55 points and ends the day in second place. Flamengo, with 53 points, plays against Chapecoense this Monday (8). Atlético-MG counts 65 points after beating América-MG by 1-0.

Santos, who came from two wins, parks at 35 points and remains close to the relegation zone.

From now on, there are eight clashes left for Atleticans and Palmeirenses. There are 24 points up for grabs. At a disadvantage today, Palmeiras will measure forces at home with Atlético-MG for the 35th round, the date and time have not yet been defined by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

The victory against Santos is the fifth consecutive victory for Abel Ferreira’s team, which is experiencing one of the best moments of the season and in 20 days it will decide the Libertadores title against Flamengo, in Montevideo, Uruguay. Before, Palmeiras defeated Internacional, Ceará, Sport and Grêmio.

The derby in Vila was a reunion of the São Paulo rivals who, on January 30, decided the Libertadores, at Maracanã. Since then, a lot has changed for the Santos players, who have suffered with changes in coaches, losses of important athletes and are bitter at the bottom of the Brazilian Championship table.

Faced with this disparity, Santos clung to the favorable retrospective in Vila Belmiro and the spirit of their fans. As home team at Vila Belmiro for the Brazilian, Santos had not lost to Palmeiras since October 4, 2009. Over these 12 years, there were seven wins and three draws. Overall, the last triumph of the palmeiras people on the coast had been in 2017, by the São Paulo Championship.

Serginho Chulapa, a technical assistant from Santos, even tried to help Fabio Carille. From the stands, he told Carille to ask Madson and Marinho to put pressure on left wing Piquerez’s defensive weakness.

But it was Palmeiras who knew how to explore this side of the field to open the scoring. On minute 43, Dudu received it in midfield, on the left, and gave the letter to Raphael Veiga, who crossed in the area for Rony to finish off goalkeeper João Paulo.

Palmeiras came back better for the second half, although Lucas Braga hit a shot on Weverton’s crossbar. In an excellent phase, Veiga scored a great goal in the 26th minute when he hit João Paulo’s angle.

Now, Palmeiras doesn’t know what it’s like to lose Santos for seven matches, the last one was in 2019. It was the fourth victory of the season over the rival.

The two teams return to the field on Wednesday (10), for the Brazilian Championship. At 19:00, Santos will play again in Vila Belmiro, against Red Bull Bragantino, and at 20:30, Palmeiras will host Atlético-GO, at Allianz Parque, in São Paulo.
